Parma MLK Tournament Champions!

Jan. 19th 2012.  The CVCA Royals won a thriller last night against their division rival the North Canton Hoover Vikings to claim the Parma MLK Tournament Championship. The tough Viking squad gave the Royals all they could handle forcing the game into overtime before Senior Captain Mark Brower (pictured) scored the winner 5:43 into the overtime period.

It was a back and forth game that saw both teams exchanging leads.  The Vikings opened the scoring midway through the 1st period only to be answered by two goals by Junior Luke Sunde 30 seconds apart to give the Royals their first lead of the game. The Vikings battled back to tie the score with 5 minutes remaining in the first period only to be answered once again by the Royals. This time it was Mark Sunde who gave the Royals a 3-2 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Vikings came out strong tying the score at 3-3 just 15 seconds into the 2nd period. The Vikings would again strike midway through the second period to claim a 4-3 lead.  Luke Sunde would tie the score midway through the 2nd period only to have the Vikings answer back to reclaim the lead. With 40 seconds remaining in the 2nd period Luke Sunde tied the game yet again and the teams headed into the 3rd period knotted at 5-5.

Midway through the 3rd period Mark Brower scored to give the Royals the lead and Will Anderson followed a minute later to extend the lead to 7-5 with 9 minutes to play in regulation time.  The determined Vikings team was not through and scored a shorthanded goal at the 5 minute mark to close the gap to a single goal.  In less than a minute the Vikings struck again to even the score at 7-7.  Both teams had great chances to win it in the waning moments of regulation but both goaltenders came up big and the game headed to overtime. Both teams were whistled for penalties 20 seconds apart and with both teams skating at 4 players’ aside Senior Captain Mark Brower broke in on goal and scored the game winner. It was an exciting ending to a hard fought game.  The two teams drop the puck again on Friday as they face each other in league play at the Centre Ice Arena in Canton. Game time is 5:50pm.
